WebJan 24, 2024 · Hypoparathyroidism is a rare condition in which your body produces abnormally low levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH), made by the parathyroid glands. PTH regulates calcium and phosphorus. When blood calcium falls too low, PTH brings it back to normal by moving calcium from the bones, kidneys, and intestines into the blood. WebPrimary Hyperparathyroidism. In Primary Hyperparathyroidism (PHPT or Hyperpara), too much parathyroid hormone is produced by one or more of the parathyroid glands because they have become enlarged or overactive. This in turn causes the body to release calcium from the bones into the blood and results in high calcium levels (hypercalcaemia).
